Chee Dale and Deep Dale Circular Walk

Places remaining: 19
Route Description
Combining peaceful limestone dales, open countryside, railway heritage, riverside woodland and the iconic Chee Dale stepping stones, this is an outstanding White Peak circular walk with plenty of scenery and interest throughout.
This Chee Dale and Deep Dale circular walk by Sheffield Walkers is a wonderfully varied 8.6-mile route through the limestone countryside of the White Peak. Starting from Wye Dale, the walk descends towards the River Wye before turning into the quieter surroundings of Deep Dale. Limestone cliffs, flower-rich grassland and secluded dale scenery lead towards Chelmorton, where traditional stone walls, open farmland and elevated views provide a striking contrast to the sheltered valleys below.
From Chelmorton, the route follows sections of the Midshires Way and Limestone Way across classic Peak District countryside before descending towards Miller’s Dale. The former railway station and Monsal Trail introduce the area’s fascinating industrial heritage, after which the walk enters the dramatic limestone gorge of Chee Dale. Here, a twisting riverside path passes beneath towering crags and through lush woodland beside the clear waters of the River Wye.
The final section includes Chee Dale’s famous stepping stones, squeezed between the river and the sheer limestone walls. These are among the most memorable features of the walk and provide an adventurous finish before the route returns through Wye Dale. The riverside path is rocky, muddy and slippery in places, while the stepping stones may become submerged or unsafe after prolonged rain. With approximately 411 metres of ascent, this is a moderate Peak District walk best suited to walkers wearing supportive footwear and comfortable crossing uneven ground.
