Route Description

Perhaps surprisingly this is a very rural route in an urban setting!

From Dodworth station we follow woodland and farmland trails towards Higham. We pass under the M1 to emerge at Higham cricket ground. The route descends through fields to Gawber where you can read about its industrial history in coal mining and glassmaking. We descend further to follow the tow path of the old Barnsley Canal which runs parallel to the River Dearne. This is a wetland area where there are swans and other water birds. The route continues around a large fishing lake called The Fleets before we finally arrive in busy Barnsley.
