Route Description

A varied circular walk combining open White Peak District countryside, atmospheric mining remains and the wooded beauty of Monsal Dale.

Starting in Ashford-in-the-Water, this route by Sheffield Walkers crosses the River Wye and climbs towards Sheldon, enjoying widening views across the surrounding limestone countryside. Our route then turns towards Magpie Mine, where the striking remains of the old lead workings stand among open fields; a distinctive reminder of the Peak District’s industrial past.

From the mine, we head north-west across farmland before descending into Deep Dale. The enclosed limestone valley provides a lovely contrast to the open ground above, leading us towards Monsal Dale and the River Wye. Here we follow the river through a landscape of wooded slopes and grassy banks, passing the weir as we approach the impressive Headstone Viaduct.

A climb brings us onto the Monsal Trail, where we cross the viaduct with views along the dale before heading through Headstone Tunnel. Leaving the former railway behind, we turn south onto field paths for the return to Ashford-in-the-Water.

Expect a mixture of pasture, stony dale paths and easy trail walking, with several climbs and descents. Field and riverside sections can be muddy, while limestone underfoot may be slippery when wet.
