Places remaining: 18

Route Description

Beautiful limestone country and a bit of local history.

Crossing the Sheepwash Bridge we make our way alongside the river Wye, and climb up through Great Shacklow Woods. Having emerged the woods we head up Narrow Dale, then crossing a series of fields we reach Sheldon village. Our lunch break will be at Magpie Mine, where we will take a few minutes to explore/take photos. The views on the next part of the walk are beautiful and far-reaching towards Chatsworth. A very steep downhill now to rejoin the riverside, and return to Ashford.
This being limestone country there are a number of field stiles, some of them a bit awkward.

  1. PLEASE NOTE
Although I’m sure you all know to park in the village. The Google maps takes you to the A6 side of the bridge where there is no vehicular access or parking.
